Tours & Workshops
Harrison Photography Adventures

Our tours feature nature’s premiere destinations at the peak times. We offer small groups, intense photography, personal instruction and a friendly, intimate atmosphere. Accommodations are the best available for the location. The tours offer not only different locations, but also an emphasis on different photographic techniques, including specialized techniques such as moonlight photography, snowy landscapes, sand dune photography, wildlife, macro, flowers, and flowing streams and waterfalls. Our experiences will be intense. We will rarely miss a sunrise or sunset, and, during full moon tours, we will photograph late into the night as well. We will fit meals around our photography schedule, and may occasionally settle for a late snack instead of a full dinner. We will do much more than photograph—we will observe and experience the profound beauty and enlightenment that nature can offer.

Our tours will offer something for all photographers, including advanced ones. Our instruction will focus on roll film equipment including 35 mm, medium format and panoramic formats. We will concentrate on both technique and artistry, as a successful photograph requires both.

We look forward to seeing you!

Yellowstone in Winter—Land of Fire and Ice
Full Moon Tour

FEBRUARY 22-MARCH 1, 2002

Yellowstone in winter has no equal as a nature photography destination. The collision of extreme cold, boiling thermal features, and abundant wildlife create an environment unlike any other. We will visit Yellowstone’s best winter photographic locations. We begin at Mammoth Hot Springs and the famous mineral terraces. We will photograph here by day and by night. In addition, we will have a full-day personal charter to the Lamar Valley. Known in winter as “North America’s Serengeti,” the Lamar Valley features large herds of bison and elk, as well as smaller animals such as red fox—spectacular in the snow! We may also see or hear Yellowstone’s famous wolves. The Lamar also offers sweeping landscapes and steaming rivers.

Two days of custom snow coach charters will take us to the Norris Geysers, the Canyon, frozen Lake Yellowstone and Mt. Washburn overlook. One highlight of these charters will be photographing in the mysterious Hayden Valley. While the Lamar Valley offers sweeping vistas and vast herds, the Hayden Valley offers a more intimate world. We will see swans and bison, snowy hills, flowing rivers and isolated trees. The Hayden Valley in winter is one of the most photogenic areas in the entire park, but is rarely visited due to the distance from the hotels and the difficulty in getting there.

After photographing the wildlife, we will have one of the rarest and most superlative Yellowstone experiences, visiting the frozen Grand Canyon and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone under the full moon. During the winter, the sun is far to the south and the Canyon and Falls are in shadow, making a beautiful sight but less interesting photographs. The moon in winter, however, follows the same path as the sun in summer. The result is glorious full-on illumination of the Canyon and Falls. We will arrive just after sunset and shoot for an hour after dark. Our trip is timed for the two days when moonrise is right at dusk, so that we have the best lighting possible. Standing at the edge of the vast Canyon lit up with moonlight is an experience almost beyond description. It is even possible we will hear the nearby wolf packs.

The Canyon area after dark is one of the harshest in the Park, with temperatures regularly dropping to well below zero immediately after sunset. Because of this, and long distances back to a hot dinner, very few people make the effort to visit the Canyon at night. Our tour, however, will have not one but two chances to make the trip, to maximize our chances of good weather and successful photos.

We will then move on to Old Faithful. Our snow coach transportation will take us through the Madison Valley, Firehole Canyon, the Fountain Paint Pots and on to the luxurious Old Faithful Snow Lodge. We will then spend two days photographing the geysers and hot springs. When the superheated water of the geysers hits the cold winter air, huge boiling clouds of steam result, and sometimes rainbows if the light is right! We also will photograph the geysers by moonlight, where long exposures and star trails can create eerie and unique effects.

Our last day sees a return to Mammoth hot springs, where we will depart and go our separate ways, hopefully richer in spirit and in our photography.

A word about our prices.
Our prices are slightly higher than some other tours you may see. The reason for this is simple—our tour will rely on intensive custom, both of snowcoaches and a bus, to reach and spend quality time at destinations other tours do not offer. In addition, due to the intense itinerary, our charters last for many hours, much longer than normal package charters. These charters, especially those to distant and difficult areas such as the Canyon and Hayden Valley, are complicated to arrange and, to put it mildly, expensive! The payoff of our extra effort, we feel, is a photographic and a personal experience without peer, and for only 15-20% over other tours.

A word about weather.
Yellowstone in winter is a harsh and difficult environment. Weather is often sunny and clear, but there is a very real chance of blizzards, extreme cold and other difficult conditions. This is the price of admission to this wonderland! OUR TOUR GOES NO MATTER WHAT. It is possible, however, that weather may make some of our planned activities either impossible or too dangerous to attempt in good judgment. This is especially true of visiting the Canyon at night. Your tour leaders, and our snow coach guide, will have final discretion about whether to make the planned trips.

If something has to be cancelled or cut short due to weather, we will attempt to arrange a price adjustment with the charter companies, and pass that back to you. This, however, might not be possible. We have to pay for the charters, in full and in advance, as part of arranging these unique trips, and any rebate is within the total discretion of the charter company.

Death Valley in Spring—Sand, Sculptures & Salt
Full Moon Tour

MARCH 23-30, 2002

In contrast to Yellowstone, Death Valley is a relatively little-visited park. Death Valley is much more than sand and salt flats, although these are certainly highlights of our tour. Death Valley is also a land of golden canyons, bitter waters, towering mountains, waterfall oases, volcanic craters and interesting history. The Park is huge, with long distances between sights.

We will begin our tour at the Stovepipe Wells Lodge. This small hotel is located next to Death Valley’s famous sculpted sand dunes. These dunes offer sweeping lines and intricate ripples. They are magical at first and last light. We will have two days to photograph in the sand at sunrise and sunset, and to contemplate the profound peace of the area. Those who desire also will be able to photograph in the dunes during the full moon. During the day, we will visit Darwin Falls, a magic oasis of green lushness, including a lovely small waterfall, in this harsh and sun-baked land. We will also visit Scotty’s Castle for some interesting human history, and Ubehebe Crater for a hint of the violent volcanic past.

We will then move to the Furnace Creek Inn, with its swimming pool and golf course. We will make this our base for visiting Zabriskie Point, and its fascinating textured badlands, at sunrise. We will also visit Dante’s View, with its vast panorama down the valley and across to the 11,000 foot peaks of the Panamint Range at first light. The days will see us visiting beautiful golden canyons, and the Artist’s Palette, where the golden rocks are colored with streaks of blue, green, red and brown minerals.

We will also visit the Devil’s Golf Course, a large area of jagged and razor-sharp salt crystals in all sorts of interesting formations. This makes for fascinating photography, especially with the mountains as background. We will be sure not to miss Badwater, the lowest point in the U.S. and usually containing a calm pool that reflects the Panamint peaks.

We are timing this trip to maximize our chance of seeing spring wild flowers. This can be one of the most glorious spectacles in the desert. The flowers, however, are very unpredictable in Death Valley and we simply have to hope for the best. Even without flowers, the sights are awe-inspiring.

Great Smoky Mountains—
Flowers, Streams & Waterfalls

APRIL 22-29, 2002

The Great Smoky Mountains are one of the most lush and inviting ecosystems in the U.S., especially in the spring. Although the Smokies are most famous for fall color, spring is equally spectacular, and with a small fraction of the crowds.

The highlight of spring, of course, is the forest wildflower bloom. The forest floor is covered with carpets of colorful flowers, as well as unique individual specimens such as the Lady Slipper. This seminar will emphasize macro flower photography as well as the special challenges inherent in forest landscapes. In addition, we are timing this tour to coincide with the annual Wildflower Pilgramage. This is a four-day educational event, during which experienced botanists and biologists conduct guided hikes on a variety of subjects. We will encourage all tour participants to take at least a half day off from photography to participate in one of these most rewarding and educational seminars.

Wildflowers, however, are just the beginning. The spring, after the snow melt, is when all of the streams and waterfalls become supercharged! The cascading streams offer fantastic textures when using long exposure times, and flowers and flowering trees often border the streams. The waterfalls are full of spray and thunder, and often contain intense rainbows.

The Smokies offer grand landscapes as well. As we visit higher elevations, the dramatic hazy layers of ridges make for beautiful shots, especially telephoto views with the rising or setting sun.

We will base our tour on both the east and west sides of the Park, as each side offers unique sights.

Price:
$1,595.00 per person, double occupancy.
